Word on the Street… in Todmorden

A chat with the local folk of Tod...
Known as the down-to-earth alternative to Hebden Bridge, Todmorden provides a welcoming refuge for those looking to escape the high prices of its famous neighbouring town. We talk to locals about why visitors should discover the hidden gems under the shadow of Stoodley Pike…

Why should people come to Todmorden?
It’s so close to the city but also surrounded by hills; it’s the best of both worlds. Before we moved here, we jumped off the train to look around, and immediately, I saw the park, the canal, and Stoodley Pike and thought, ‘I could run up there.’
What local events would you recommend?
There are always lots of things going on for kids, which is perfect for me and the young ones.

Why should people come to Todmorden?
Because we’re very friendly people!
What local events would you recommend?
We love to go and see the shows that they perform at the Hippodrome, as well as the coffee mornings they hold there. The park also puts on some great events that we often go to.

Why should people come to Todmorden?
There’s been a big influx of new people into Todmorden in the last 20 years, which has brought new life. We’ve got lots of interesting little shops which really showcase the creativity of the town. This comes out in the music scene, in the art, the bakers and cafes — there’s such a varied number of things that you can come and see here. And then, of course, we have such fabulous hills. So, there are great things for outdoorsy types, but also people who just want a really nice piece of cake and coffee.
What local events do you recommend?
The Hebden Bridge Arts Festival is this coming weekend, which is great for going around the different studios and seeing all the amazing creations. The Folk Festival is also brilliant because even if you don’t attend any of the music events, you can see the Morris dancers on the street having a wonderful time.

Why should people come to Todmorden?
We have the Incredible Edible, which is great; lots of people come because of that. It’s also very LGBTQ friendly. Many people come up from Hebden because they find it too touristy—I like it better here because it’s much quieter.
What local events do you recommend?
The burlesque festival is amazing; it’s held every year at the Hippodrome. I also go to the orchestra at the Town Hall and the Lamplighter festival, although they haven’t done it this year.

Why should people come to Todmorden?
I think Todmorden’s a lovely place. There are so many interesting shops, art and music, and the housing is far more affordable than down South. There are huge numbers of people moving in from Manchester because there’s just so much to do — Incredible Edible, the canal, Gaddings Dam, and lots of other things to recommend.
What local events do you recommend?
It’s definitely the Handmade Parade; it’s not to be missed because it’s just so fantastic. The plays at the theatre are always great, and there’s always good music going on somewhere, the Golden Lion especially.

Why should people come to Todmorden?
It’s very friendly. People will always say hello and chat about dogs, the weather, sausages, whatever’s on their minds. It’s a very welcoming and down-to-earth place to live.
What local events do you recommend?
There is always something happening. We saw live music at the Unitarian Church the other week, went to the Country Fair, saw DJs at the Golden Lion, and watched plays at the Hippodrome. You’re never short of something to do.
