Newly completed Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese experience is the perfect family day out this summer

by Northern Life

Visitors to The Wensleydale Creamery this Summer will be the first to see the newly completed Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese Experience, following a £5m investment in the Creamery and its Visitor Centre.

Based at Hawes, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, The Wensleydale Creamery welcomes an extraordinary 250,000 visitors each year and, following the completion of its Visitor Experience this Summer, is expected to see even more visitors enjoying its new interactive activities and events.

Taking a journey through the art of cheese-making, visitors can see the highly-skilled cheese-makers handcrafting Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese first-hand from a new interactive Viewing Gallery, complete with touch screens showing the entire cheese-making process, plus ‘behind the scenes’ footage. Many cheese-making secrets can be discovered, such as how cranberries are put into Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, how blue cheese becomes blue, and how the miniature cheeses are coated in wax.

The Creamery’s Cheese Experts will be on hand to deliver talks and tastings, educating visitors about the authentic taste and provenance of Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. In daily cheese-making demonstrations, visitors can watch cheese experts turn eight pints of milk into a 500g Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese in just 40 minutes! Booking is essential.

David Hartley, Managing Director of The Wensleydale Creamery, explains: “As we celebrate the completion of a significant investment in both our Visitor Centre and our Creamery, we look forward to welcoming visitors throughout the Summer to enjoy the ultimate Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese Experience. Promising a fun day out, with lots to see and do for all the family, visitors can delight in a true taste of Yorkshire, discover the world of cheese-making and whet their appetite with our award-winning range of cheeses.”

There is fun for the kids with interactive games and activities, not forgetting a Wallace and Gromit area too. After watching the cheese being made from the interactive Viewing Gallery, there is the all-important cheese sampling to be done in the much-loved cheese shop; a large refrigerated room, offering unlimited samples of over 20 varieties!

To round off the trip, visitors can sit back, relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales from the 1897 Coffee Shop as they indulge. Whether that be with an ultimate grilled cheese sandwich, Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese on toast, home-made cakes and pastries, or speciality teas and coffees, made and served with local milk. Alternatively, they can head to the welcoming Calvert’s Restaurant to enjoy daily specials, or try out the three course Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese Special.

The Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre is especially proud to serve food that is all home-made and locally sourced, creating many dishes inspired by its award-winning cheese, butter and yogurt too.

For those searching for that special present, The Gift Shop boasts a fantastic selection of giftware with new ranges recently introduced.
