“THE CAMERA THAT SAVED US”: How Barnoldswick Mum Turned Hardship Into Hope Through Photography
by Northern Life
"It saved me. It saved my kids. It gave us a way forward."
When Barnoldswick mum Zoe Hodkinson first lifted her phone to photograph a sunset in lockdown, she didn’t realise she was beginning something that would change her life. What started as a quiet escape from the pressures of an uncertain world soon became a lifeline. Her photos of local landscapes and everyday beauty were shared widely—featured on weather pages, in magazines, and even winning competitions.

But behind those peaceful images was a difficult reality. During the same period, Zoe’s daughter was recovering from a major bowel operation, leaving Zoe unable to work and relying on a food bank to get by. Photography became the thread of hope she held onto.
Trusting her instinct, Zoe created a Barnoldswick calendar using her favourite photos. Selling more than 300 copies, she earned just enough to buy her first proper camera—her first step toward rebuilding. She began offering free shoots for weddings, birthdays, and families, determined to learn while giving back to the community that supported her. Word spread. Free shoots became paid ones.
Today, she has captured more than 40 weddings and countless milestones. Still self-taught, Zoe keeps pushing herself. A recent highlight was being chosen for the Hill and High Fashion Exhibition, working alongside renowned photographer Quinn Lovero around Pendle Hill—a moment that reminded her how far she has come.
Her journey has also led her into teaching. Zoe now works part-time as a photography tutor for young adults with additional needs. One dream remains: hosting her own full exhibition. Money is tight, but she’s moving steadily toward it, one project at a time.
Ask Zoe what photography means to her, and she’s clear: “It saved me. It saved my kids. It gave us a way forward.”
