Some of South America’s most amazing young performers will show off their skills at Blackpool festival Showzam! after being given the opportunity to train with a world-leading circus school.
Jaws will drop as high energy Columbian circus company Circolombia takes to the ring to perform their new show in the famous Blackpool Tower Circus during the festival which runs from February 14 – 18 – their only UK performances outside London in 2015.
Billed as “offering a unique artistic experience with genuine Latin inspiration,” Circolombia brings a team of highly skilled and powerful performers with an impressive skillset and the fearless grit to perform terrifying live stunts.
And amazingly many of the performers in Circolombia were originally vulnerable and at risk young people living in Columbia who have been trained and graduated from the country’s Circo Para Todos – Circus for All.
Michael Trainor, Artistic Director at LeftCoast – the organisation commissioned to programme this year’s Showzam!, says Circolombia will add something completely different to the festival.
He said: “We are really excited about Circolombia as they bring a whole new dimension to Showzam! Circus is often seen as a very traditional performance but this year’s Showzam! Circus is completely different to anything we’ve had in the past and is a rare opportunity for Blackpool and North West audiences.
“These South American performers are outstanding and combine high energy urban street dance with breath-taking stunts alongside live vocals and an original soundtrack, so this really will be circus like you’ve never seen before.
“When you couple that with the fact Circolombia is filled with performers who previously led very vulnerable lives but who have now become international stars, I am delighted we are able to showcase this in Blackpool.”
Inspired by Columbia’s diverse communities the show features 14 of the most talented performers from across the country and includes some of the biggest stars of international circus who have been on an incredible journey to join this amazing company.
The Blackpool performances also marks the UK premier of the show – a freestyle portrait of a society where dance and music are an escape from everyday life.
It is performed as a true narrative of life on the streets and is based on the experiences of the young cast infused with perfectly mastered acrobatics as they show audiences they really can reach for the stars.
Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: “The performance of Circolombia at Showzam! is a UK premiere and a real coup for Blackpool.
“It promises to be some of the most dazzling, dynamic and exciting performances we’ve seen in Blackpool for many years so it really is not one to miss.”
