Scarborough Open Air Theatre has announced the first headline dates for it’s 2021 season. With the 2020 season lost to Coronavirus, the Yorkshire coast venue’s live music programmers Cuffe and Taylor have spent the last few months putting together a line-up for the 2021 season they promise will be the biggest and best ever.
The first headline acts for 2021 to be announced are Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Olly Muirs and RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq The World Tour with tickets for the new season on sale from Friday 9 October.
The legendary Nile Rodgers & CHIC are returning to Scarborough Open Air Theatre, the UK’s largest purpose-built outdoor concert arena on Friday 20 August.
Grammy Award-winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist Nile Rodgers has more than 200 production credits to his name and, as the co-founder of CHIC, he pioneered a musical language that generated chart-topping hits such as Le Freak, Good Times and Everybody Dance that sparked the advent of hip-hop.
Nile Rodgers & CHIC are no strangers to Scarborough Open Air Theatre having played a sell-out show at the venue in 2018. They were due to play in Scarborough this summer only for the show to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nile transcends all styles of music across every generation with a body of work that’s gained him inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
“We were absolutely devastated to cancel this year’s summer season at Scarborough OAT,” said promoter Peter Taylor. “Therefore, we are delighted to announce Nile and CHIC will be returning to Scarborough in 2021. They are global superstars, Nile is behind some of the best known songs ever written and this is going to be a night not to be missed. Their show here in 2018 was just sensational and we’ve had so many fans asking us to bring them back.
Olly Murs, one of British music’s biggest and best loved stars, will play Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Saturday 10 July, mid-way through his 25 date summer tour. The chart-topping singer, who has previously sold out shows at Scarborough OAT in 2013 and 2017, will be performing his biggest hits, including tracks from his recently certified triple platinum album Never Been Better.
It has been a busy year for Olly, who recently captained England in this year’s Soccer Aid, and is looking to retain his crown as winning judge on his third series of The Voice, which has currently been postponed at the semi-final stages.
In lockdown, he also managed an impressive body transformation, working closely with personal trainer Rob Solly, and sharing his fitness routine exclusively with Men’s Health. Olly is also working on new music for the new year.
Peter Taylor said: “We are really excited to announce Olly Murs who played two brilliant shows here in 2013 and 2017. Fans are constantly requesting we bring him back which we are delighted to do.
Due to phenomenal demand RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq The World Tour, the biggest drag show on the planet, has added an extra special Yorkshire coast date for 2021.The smash-hit live stage show, which has sold out arenas around the globe, sashays into Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Sunday 20 June for its only outdoor date in the UK.
RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq The World sensationally mixes music, comedy and lavish set pieces to create the biggest, brashest and utterly glorious party night of the year.
Acclaimed for its amazing production values, this is the fourth iteration of the ground-breaking tour in the UK and Europe. The show for 2021 sees an experiment gone wrong which sends Drag Race judge and Strictly Come Dancing star Michelle Visage spiraling through time with no way of returning “home”.
The audience will join newly crowned Season 12 Drag Race winner Jaida Essence Hall, Asia O’Hara, Kameron Michaels, Plastique Tiara, Vanessa Vanjie and Yvie Oddly, along with stars from the latest US, UK, and Canadian Seasons, as they journey through iconic periods of history in the hope they will find their way back to the present day.
“We are delighted to be able to bring RuPaul’s Drag Race’s World Tour to Scarborough,” said Peter Taylor. “The demand for tickets across the UK and Europe has been phenomenal. The show is always a huge hit and we are really looking forward to be working with the Voss Events team to present what will be an outrageously entertaining evening on the beautiful Yorkshire coast.
“2020 has been an awful year for live music and events,” he added, “but we have spent the last few months planning to return with a real bang in 2021. It will be the largest number of shows we’ve ever programmed at Scarborough OAT and the line-up will bring together music legends, global chart-toppers and some of the most exciting breakthrough artists of the last few years.
“We will be announcing more headliners over the next few weeks and we hope to have 90% of our programming for 2021 announced before Christmas, so Scarborough can make plans for a busy summer season.”
