Room With a Moo!

Moo View offers a rare kind of rural magic

Over 20 years ago, Jack Howarth’s parents discovered a peaceful patch of land just outside Pickering, North Yorkshire, and decided to make it their home.

Surrounded by rolling green fields and open skies, it was the perfect setting to start a dairy farm and embrace rural life. Six years ago, Jack and Martha Howarth moved into the farmhouse they built on the property, continuing the family tradition and building a life rooted in this beautiful corner of the county.

Last year, Martha decided it was time to share this special location with others. Inspired by the idea of welcoming guests to experience the serenity of the countryside, she invested in a Shepherd’s Hut and Moo View was born.

“I’d always wanted to do something like that, and having it on the farm made it easy to fit in with family life,” says Martha. “It’s such a beautiful spot, it seemed only right to let others enjoy it too.”

If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up to the sight of dew-kissed pastures, the gentle lowing of cows in the distance, and fresh air that feels like a tonic for the soul, Moo View is your dream come to life. Nestled within the farm, the Shepherd’s Hut offers guests a truly unique stay, surrounded by nature, steeped in comfort and Yorkshire charm.

But don’t let the word hut mislead you — Moo View is far from rustic. Inside, the space has been carefully curated to offer boutique comfort in a charming, compact form. The interior is thoughtfully designed with high-quality fixtures, a cosy colour palette, and personal touches that make it feel like a home away from home.

What sets Moo View apart is the personal touch Martha and her family have infused into every corner. The hut is filled with thoughtful details—from curtains and cushions handcrafted by Martha and her mum, to original marketing illustrations drawn by Martha’s sister. Emma Bridgewater crockery adds a charming, country-luxe feel to the kitchen, making Moo View not just a getaway, but a true home-from-home.

The space includes a king-size double bed with sumptuous linens, a well-equipped kitchenette, and a sleek bathroom. You’ll also find reliable Wi-Fi and a TV for cosy nights in, though many guests find themselves switching off the screens in favour of stargazing, reading, or soaking in the quiet.

The outdoor space at Moo View is every bit as inviting as the interior. A private garden wraps around the hut, complete with a wood-fired hot tub — with wood provided — that’s perfect for soaking under the stars. There’s also a BBQ for al fresco meals and a fire pit to warm you on those cooler evenings.

Imagine sipping your morning coffee while watching cows amble by on their way to milking, or wrapping yourself in a blanket by the fire as dusk falls.

Being located on a working dairy farm adds an extra layer of charm to Moo View. Guests get a glimpse of rural life, cows pass close by the hut daily, and the scenery shifts gently with the rhythms of the farm. It’s immersive, without being intrusive. And while you’re very much part of the countryside here, you’re also perfectly secluded.

There’s only one hut, so privacy is guaranteed. “It’s very peaceful where we are. People are able to really relax and enjoy the scenery,” Martha says.

For those who want to explore beyond the hut, there’s plenty to do locally. The historic market town of Pickering is just a short drive away, home to independent shops, cafés, and the dramatic ruins of Pickering Castle. It’s also the departure point for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, one of the country’s most iconic steam railways. For family fun, Flamingo Land theme park and zoo is nearby too.

“this kind of countryside charm doesn’t stay secret for long”

Martha goes above and beyond to make every stay memorable. Guests are welcomed with thoughtful touches, including fluffy dressing gowns, delicious local treats, and of course, milk fresh from the farm.
