Yorkshire is one of the most desirable places in the UK to retire to, according to research conducted by retirement community developer McCarthy & Stone.

After speaking directly to retired residents from the McCarthy & Stone’s Fairway View development in Brough East Yorkshire, five key reasons were cited as to why this county has made retirement such a joy for those who have chosen to live there over other areas of the UK.

Here’s five of the top reasons to retire to Yorkshire:

The Beautiful Rural Scenery

“It’s got beautiful scenery, both country and seaside… it really is one of the most incredible places in the country and it has so many little towns and villages that feel cosy and intimate.” – Sisters Dora and Mary Berry

The Real Sense of Community

“We’ve found that there’s quite a strong sense of village community here… we can really see the difference and how much community matters to people around here and in the nearby villages.Vivienne Ainsworth

It’s Easy to Get Around

“Travel is much easier, within a five-minute drive we can easily get to lots of little places and villages. We’re discovering something new every day it feels like we’re on a permanent holiday!” – Vivienne Ainsworth

The Great Reputation

“When we’ve visited other places in the UK, we’ve met people who weren’t from Yorkshire and they’ll say things like: ‘we went for a holiday in Yorkshire and didn’t realise it was so beautiful’”. – Sisters Dora and Mary Berry

The Things You Can’t Find Anywhere Else

“It’s the most beautiful place in the country. We’ve got some great things you can’t find anywhere else either. Bettys (award winning tea room) is one – and there are plenty of wonderful fish and chip shops.” – Sisters Dora and Mary Berry

A spokesperson from McCarthy & Stone commented:

“With so much to offer, it’s no surprise Yorkshire is becoming more and more popular as a place to retire. After speaking to a selection of residents in our Fairway View development, it’s clear to see that Yorkshire can offer community, culture, and even some things that you can’t find anywhere else in the country.

“We’re proud that we have a number of developments across Yorkshire where our residents can experience all the benefits Yorkshire can provide. Your retirement should be something to enjoy and this variety of positive attributes courtesy of ‘God’s own country’ certainly goes a long way towards ensuring that this is the case.”
