When Saima Akram was made redundant from the customer services job she loved, she was understandably upset but decided to turn a setback into an opportunity.

She studied hair and beauty at her local college, became a freelance beauty therapist for a few years building on her expertise, and last year became the proud owner of Poppies Beauty Bank in Burnley.

“Opening a hair salon has further developed it as a ‘one-stop’ beauty shop”

Inside this magnificent former bank building in the town centre is a salon where the pampered clients enjoy a comprehensive range of hair and beauty treatments including Touchskin21, a range of affordable non-invasive alternatives to expensive surgical cosmetic treatments, exclusive in the North West to Poppies.

“Touchskin 21 has become very popular,” says Saima. “Clients have come for treatment on one area and been so impressed they’ve come back to have another area done.”

The Touchskin 21 procedure dissolves flat dead skin cells, resulting in rejuvenating, resurfacing, biostimulating which helps your collagen and elastin to reproduce, lifting and tightening, and also remodels the skin.

It can be used on upper and lower eyelids, crows’ feet, full facelift, neck lift, lips, nose-to-mouth, and on small-to-large areas of skin to deal with such as scars, stretch marks, age spots and sun spots. Prices range from £75 for small blemishes to £590 for the full eye treatment.

“It’s less expensive than surgery, it’s non-invasive and it’s permanent,” says Saima.

A client who is currently undergoing this treatment at Poppies was going to pay £3,000 to £5,000 for a full eye treatment but is very happy with the procedure and the cost we offer.

We will be adding these photos to our Facebook page once the treatment has been completed.

Saima recently added a hair salon to Poppies, where she does the hairdressing herself along with stylist Jessica Price, and another stylist joined the team in July.

“When I was made redundant I was quite gutted about it, as I thought this was my job for life, but as one door closes another opens and it gave me the chance to do something that I loved to do,” says Saima, a 36-year-old mother of three who lives at Nelson.

“My family and friends always said I had an aptitude for beauty, so I decided to go to Nelson and Colne College and get my qualifications in hair and beauty.

“I was self-employed for a few years but I always wanted my own salon.” I am very passionate about my job and so are the Poppies Girls. At Poppies it’s all about you and we value our client and their feedback. It’s not just about providing a service, it’s about going the extra mile for our clients. As a single mother of three. I feel blessed with this opportunity, at Poppies where we can offer our skills, services and more to our clients.”

Poppies had been established for a number of years when Saima became the new owner last November. Opening a hair salon has further developed it as a ‘one-stop’ beauty shop.

There’s hair styling and treatments, skin care, nail bar, brow and lash bar, hair removal, Elemis facial and body therapy. Gents are also catered for, there are ‘tots and teens’ treatments, and down in the former bank vault there’s the Hush Lounge Spa, where clients enjoy the calm and tranquillity. It’s also available for pamper parties, ideal for get-togethers such as girls’ nights, hen parties, engagement parties, baby showers, leaving parties and reunions.

Clients can join Poppies Club, where the £69 monthly membership brings an attractive package of offers, and all clients can also take advantage of a new special offer that changes every month.
