Meet the Squibbles
by Lauren Read
When Jay Stansfield, from Colne in Lancashire, was faced with lockdown in March 2020, whilst most of us were struggling with boredom, he put his imagination to work and ‘The Squibbles’ were born soon after. Jay’s creative nature was ignited. But who are the Squibbles you might ask?
“The Squibbles are little characters that you can colour in. They’re all holding blank squares so that you can scribble whatever you want in,” grins Jay. “I wanted to give children and parents something to fill their time with, something to make them feel good and to document their journey of what’s been going on, so I created a colouring journal. In a nutshell, the Squibbles are whoever you want them to be, readers have even helped give them their own names and personalities, which is great!”
A year later and Jay has also now released his first children’s book on Amazon called ‘Meet the Squibbles’ which is typically aimed at four- to seven-year-olds. “I’ve got two daughters, one aged six and one 11. I’ve always read books to them; they love stories and they love being silly. I wanted to incorporate that into a book, so took some of the characters that I drew in Squibbles, coloured them in, added a few things and created Meet the Squibbles”. Jay is hoping this will be the start of a series of books, using characters from Squibblesville, which is where the quirky characters live. Jay did some research and found Amazon KDP, which is a way of self-publishing and immediately thought he would “give it a whirl.”
Launched in February 2021, the book has received amazing feedback. “It created a real buzz, it makes people feel good, it makes people smile, which is what I want. I want to give people joy and fun and get people together. Whatever positive feeling it brings, that’s what I want and it’s doing that, which makes me so happy.
“People have been sending me photos of themselves with the book which is always really amazing to see. Some people have been putting little quotes in the boxes, some people have been naming the characters and it’s just really lovely.” So, where will your
imagination take you and who will be your favourite Squibble?
