by Northern Life

The importance of hormone health

Dr Milli Raizada, from Preston, who has gained widespread recognition for her work in hormonal health and whose book Happy Hormones, Happy You is an Amazon best seller, spoke amongst other NHS voices to shape the future. Her talk, titled “How to help your hormones work for you and not against you“, captivated a diverse audience as part of the TEDx NHS collaborative line-up of guest speakers to inspire reflection and change. The 15-minute talk is now live and free for people to view online, and there is some valuable information and tips to take away.

Dr Milli Raizada has worked as a doctor for 15 years and, in that time, has seen thousands of women struggling with their hormones and suffering from chronic health conditions. She has been through a battle with her own hormones and weight management and has tried every diet under the sun. At a point of burnout and the lowest ebb possible, she turned her health around through lifestyle choices, fitness and a better understanding of health and happiness in the perimenopausal and menopausal phases.

In her TEDx talk, Dr. Raizada emphasised the importance of hormone health in both men and women, focusing on common conditions such as thyroid disorders, menopause, PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), and adrenal dysfunction. She provided evidence-based strategies for recognising symptoms, diagnosing hormone imbalances, and implementing lifestyle changes to restore balance and improve quality of life.

Dr Milli has her bespoke clinic, which she believes will provide access to hundreds of people who are unable to get the help they need to understand their hormonal imbalances.

“Hormones play an integral role in every aspect of our health, and yet many people don’t realise how imbalances can affect their lives.”

Her work is based on an understanding of the intricate connection between hormonal balance and overall wellness. She encourages patients to take a holistic approach to their health, considering factors like diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep.

She said: “It was an honour to speak at such a prestigious venue and share my passion for hormone health with a wider audience. Hormones play an integral role in every aspect of our health, and yet many people don’t realise how imbalances can affect their lives. My goal was to bring awareness to the science of hormones and empower individuals to take charge of their health by recognising and addressing hormonal imbalances early on.”

Dr Milli continued: “Following a period of research and listening to my patients, one thing has become clear. There is simply not enough education and tailored care for the many women who are struggling to understand their hormones. In my online clinic, patients can receive personalised advice and plans tailored to their unique needs. Through secure online platforms, I provide hour-length appointments, enabling patients to schedule consultations and testing at their convenience without the hassle of long waiting times typical of traditional healthcare settings.”

“As a GP and qualified lifestyle medicine physician, I not only take a medical standpoint, but I also look at your journey, health issues and goals in a holistic and root causeway. I have already had an amazing response from people across the north, and this unique offering is also attracting clients from as far as London and Edinburgh. We are stepping into an era of demystifying the taboo subject of hormones and chronic health. I am so passionate about continuing this so the next generation of women feel empowered.

Milli’s three key steps to happy hormones

Recognise the signs:

In a symphony orchestra, all the instruments played together need to be in harmony. Our hormones work in very much the same way. If one of those instruments plays a note out of tune, we can notice it, and it’s jarring. Your organs and tissues release hormones into the blood. They travel throughout your body, regulating and controlling the systems that affect growth, metabolism, mood, reproduction and sexual function. If your body produces too little or too much of a particular hormone, it can impact any of those functions. When our hormones are out of balance, our body shows signs and symptoms, so don’t ignore them. These can include low mood, acne, low sex drive, bloating and gas in the gut, trouble sleeping, weight gain and weight loss, plus many more. It’s a huge list! Take note of any changes, as this is the first step to understanding what’s occurring to regain harmony.

What to do if you think you have a hormone imbalance:

Hormonal imbalances aren’t always easy to detect — no single test evaluates all hormone levels. Various tests are available to measure specific hormone levels. However, the best thing you can do is share your symptoms and concerns with your GP. Medical professionals will consider your entire health and can perform assessments that may get you one step closer to treating your symptoms. I treat people through the NHS or deliver healthcare to individuals seeking quality medical assistance through my private one-to-one clinic. The clinic aims to help people tackle issues with a 360-degree approach, using detailed testing and finding lifestyle solutions to treat the symptoms of their root cause.

Sing the six pillars:

Although ageing and other factors such as genes are shown to affect hormones and are beyond your control, you can take several steps to help manage your hormone levels through lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes are important for managing hormone imbalances because various aspects of our daily habits, like diet, exercise, stress levels, and sleep patterns, can significantly impact hormone production and regulation, meaning that modifying these behaviours can help restore hormonal balance. Six areas within lifestyle medicine should be addressed to improve hormone health: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, emotional wellness, positive psychology and avoidance of toxic substances. Some people choose to implement one change at a time, while others look to a combination of techniques to get their symptoms under control. I love to help people unlock the power to make positive changes so they feel better in their bodies.
