Illuminating Rotherham for Children’s Capital of Culture
by Northern Life
Rotherham's young people are celebrating the city
The night sky was lit up back in January with the lyrics of the Arctic Monkeys, which sang over the South Yorkshire landscape. Installed on the 5th of January, the lights dazzled for two weeks, with Rotherham children reclaiming the lyrics to celebrate the city becoming the first Children Capital of Culture.

Rosehill Park
A 25-metre illuminated Hollywood hill-style sign sat atop Rother Valley Country Park. Spelling out “You’re Not From New York, You’re From Rov’rum” in homage to the famous Arctic Monkey lyrics. The Aston Youth Group, who created the sign, hope it will give young people a sense of pride in their home town during the landmark year for the borough.

Kimberworth Park
As well as the leading Rother Valley piece, a disused bandstand at Rosehill Park was transformed into a vibrant outdoor art gallery by eight- and nine-year-olds from Rawmarsh Ashwood Primary School, while an immersive art walkway with hanging tree trinkets was installed at Kimberworth Park by neurodivergent young adults.
