Across the county, there are some fantastic spots for afternoon tea, so if you’re visiting North Yorkshire and wish to enjoy a spot of it, here are five options you should consider…

Bettys Café Tea Rooms, Harrogate

We’re going to start in our hometown, of course, and at a true institution, Bettys Café Tea Rooms. Established in 1919, Bettys almost feels like the home of afternoon tea, and Harrogate offers locations in York, Ilkley, Harlow Carr, and Northallerton.

It oozes timeless elegance. It offers fantastic pastries, sandwiches, cakes, and tea, all capped off with wonderful service. It’s a bucket list destination for any afternoon tea fan.

The Black Swan, Helmsley

Located in Helmsley, an hour’s drive north from Harrogate, the Black Swan is a 15th-century coaching inn with a beautiful tearoom looking out to the walled gardens. The tearoom is calm and relaxing, with plenty of types of tea, sandwiches, and some beautifully-tasting scones.

You can also opt for a Champagne afternoon tea if you’re feeling particularly cheeky. We’re sure we would be!

The Star Inn the City, York

One of the finest restaurants in York, The Star Inn the City is a great option for afternoon tea, as well as a Sunday lunch. Located by the side of the River Ouse, with great views of the Museum Gardens, you’ll find plenty of classics, as well as some more innovative creations for your afternoon tea.

Gastronomically, it’s superb, featured in the Michelin Guide and just a really calming spot with great service to accompany your great company.

The Grand Hotel & Spa, York

The Grand Hotel & Spa in York is synonymous with luxury and sophistication. Housed in the city’s former railway headquarters, this five-star hotel provides a sumptuous afternoon tea experience.
