Chorley Photographic Society
by Northern Life
Photography is an exciting hobby and when people buy their first digital camera they frequently look for guidance, inspiration or how to take better photographs. Chorley Photographic Society provides that guidance and help and their members have a wide array of skills and knowledge, ranging from the ‘keen to learn’ beginner through to the professional.
The Society is a world renowned group of photographers. With members at every level, from experienced photographers to absolute beginners, the group’s images have been displayed in everything from community exhibitions though to global competitions.
President Will Stead believes the best part of being involved in the society is its emphasis on its members and providing something for everyone. “It really helps newcomers when they join as our members have a wealth of experience and are always keen to share tips and techniques. Yet at the same time, there is enough going on to keep everyone engaged,” says Will.
The Society was initially formed in 1895 as a sketching society before moving into early photography with plates then film. More recently the club has focused purely on digital photography with all their work being either printed or digitally projected.
The club has built a strong reputation for its outstanding and creative photography. The results of competitions have earned the club a position as one of the top 10 clubs in the UK and top 20 globally. The clubs latest success came as recent as July when they came 5th in the UK Interclub Championships, organised by the PAGB.
Based at Chorley Cricket Club, members meet every Monday night during the winter where they welcome visiting photographers from near and far.
