Volunteers from London 2012 legacy charity Join In, supported a peloton of celebrities as they saddle up for the charity cycle event the Tour de ITV. Setting off from The Rovers Return on Coronation Street, over the Pennines, and up to the Woolpack in Emmerdale the 60 mile ride, which took place earlier this month, brought together local sports clubs, schools and volunteers to highlight the importance of volunteering in sport
The intrepid cyclists were Emmerdale stars Gaynor Faye, Nicola Wheeler, Jamie Shelton and James Hooton, Coronation Street’s Colson Smith, Good Morning Britain presenter Laura Tobin, 911 singer Jimmy Constable, and TV presenters Matt Littler and Darren Jeffries. Helping them on their way was celebrity volunteer Lee Brennan, Jimmy’s 911 bandmate.
The Tour de ITV is part of the nationwide ITV Local Heroes campaign, whose aim is to inspire and encourage people to volunteer with sports clubs and make a difference in their communities.
“At Join In, we believe no-one rides in a Grand Tour or plays in a World Cup without starting out in a grassroots club run by volunteers. So we’ll be engaging with local schools and sports clubs along the route, encouraging them to cheer on the riders at dedicated stop points, and showcasing the vital role volunteers play in community sport.”
