We’ve been looking at home security systems for a while now and we’ve realised that choosing one is no mean feat. There is a hell of a lot to consider, which is why we want to share with you what we think is the best smart home security system on the market.

At this time of year home security is a big concern and its important to not only be secure, but to actually feel secure too, Ring‘s home security products do exactly that.

“What if you could stop them in the act, even if you’re not at home?”

With many home security systems you rely on the presence of a camera to act as the deterent. Beyond that, you can review footage of the crime usually long after the crime was commited. But what if you could stop them in the act, even if you’re not at home? Ring‘s home security products provide you with alerts and a live feed of any suspicious activity and give you the opportunity to speak to the intruder via the intercom system, so you can politely tell them to “go away” – or words to that effect!

Caught in the act

Ring users share their experiences, and as you can see it’s quite effective!

Ring Smart Video Doorbell
Ring Smart Video Doorbell

The product you see in the video above is the Ring Smart Video Doorbell. This is probably our favourite product in the Ring security range. Now before we tell you the price we’d like to tell you what it does.

It might be small but it packs some serious features!

This humble looking box replaces your normal doorbell, and adds features that let you monitor your home from anywhere, so you never miss a visitor.

With the Ring Smart Video Doorbell you can answer the door from anywhere. Get an instant alert to your smart device when anyone presses the doorbell or triggers the built-in motion sensor. With two-way voice interaction you can see, hear and speak to your visitor by using the Ring app on your smart device, while noise cancellation technology improves the quality of the audio signal. The Video Doorbell Pro emits an audible alert outside the home. It can be wired to trigger your existing doorbell, or linked over Wi-Fi to the Ring Chime to sound an alert within the home.

Go on then, how much?

Depending on the spec, a Ring Smart Video Doorbell will come in at £135-£229. We know this seems expensive for a doorbell (which is why we waited to tell you!); but this is so much more than a doorbell. You can set your doorbell to notify you not only when someone presses the doorbell but when some enters your predefined motion detection area (up to 30ft). On a more practical level, if you receive a delivery and you’re not in, you can quickly tell the delivery driver to leave your parcel in a safe place when you’re out, or communicate with anybody you’re unsure of without having to open the door. It also means that you can easily make it seem that you are in the house, when you might actually be on the commute to work.

Ring Floodlight Cam
Ring Floodlight Cam

The smart doorbell is complimented by a range of cameras and motion detectors that complete your “Ring” of security.

The Ring Floodlight Cam is a motion activated security camera armed with two ultra-bright LED floodlights and a 110dB siren alarm. It offers smart surveillance with enhanced security features for outside the home, and allows you to interact with visitors or ward off intruders. An ultra-wide 270 degree field of detection monitors round corners and in blind-spots, with dual sensors for object and facial detection. As with the doorbell you get an instant alert to your smart device when anyone triggers the built-in motion sensor and two-way voice interaction. The lights can be triggered by the motion detector, or by yourself via the app, which also allows you to sound the alarm or zoom in to focus on a specific area.Ring
