Skipton celebrates its namesake each June with a sheep day. This year’s celebration took place on the 25th of June when sheep displays, racing, and many other sheep-related activities filled the High Street.

Skipton has even been named the best place to live in Britain following a compilation in the Sunday Times. The low crime rate, good schools and transport links helped Skipton cinch the top spot.
J – Jubilee
For the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, volunteers from Craven College transformed a patch of land on Newmarket Street into a beautiful garden celebrating the 60-year reign of Queen Elizabeth. The garden won multiple awards, including Craven Community Champions – Best Community Project Award.
K – Knights
In local folklore, the town has connections to the Knights Templar, a medieval Christian military order. It is believed that the Knights Templar had a presence in Skipton, with the Knights known to have resided within the Yorkshire Dales. The knights swore vows of poverty and wore white habits emblazoned with a red cross.
L – Lore
As well as tales of knights, this historic town is rich in folklore. One story of the supernatural may amuse Harry Potter readers, for in this area, the familiar legend of a phantom black hound is known as Padfoot, the nickname for Sirius Black in the series. Described as the size of a small bear, towns and villages around Skipton have claimed this spectre haunts the streets at night, chasing those who remain out after dark.
M – Marks and Spencer
Thomas Spencer, the renowned co-founder of Marks & Spencer, was born in Queen’s Court, Skipton, in 1858. His birthplace in this quaint town holds historical significance as the starting point of an iconic retail brand that has left an indelible mark on the British retail industry.
N – Northern
Amid the English Civil War, Skipton Castle served as a royalist garrison led by Sir John Mallory. It stood as the final stronghold of the royalist forces in Northern England, enduring a three-year siege until its surrender on December 20th, 1645.
