Photo North Festival Returns to Leeds This March
by Northern Life
Photo North Festival is shaping up to be one of the most lively and welcoming photo events in Europe.
Photo North Festival is back, and it’s bringing its trademark warmth, grit and big ideas to Leeds once again. Running from 13–15 March 2026 at The Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square, the seventh edition promises three days of powerful photography, good conversation and a proper northern welcome.
Often described as “different to other photography festivals”, Photo North is known for its relaxed, inclusive atmosphere where everyone’s on the same level – from world-famous photographers to first-time visitors. Expect a packed programme of exhibitions, talks, screenings, portfolio reviews, workshops, competitions, book signings and plenty of food, drink and chat in between.

This year’s highlights include exhibitions curated by Leeds International African Arts Festival, celebrating creativity and renewal in African photography; Soulla Petrou’s Rewind, capturing 15 years of UK music and club culture; and Jaywick Sands Happy Club by David J Shaw, a collaborative project challenging lazy narratives about one of Britain’s most misunderstood communities.

There’s also deeply moving work on motherhood and mental health from Carolyn Mendelsohn, poetic explorations of Orkney by Joanne Coates, powerful photojournalism from Seamus Murphy and Mike Goldwater. Plus, the latest winner of the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant, Omar Ashtawy, who is living and working in Gaza.

Festival co-founder Peter Dench says the aim is simple: to inspire, challenge and spark debate through photography, all under one roof. Co-founder Sharon Price adds that the 2026 programme balances hard-hitting social commentary with moments of beauty and reflection.
