Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum

Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum, which dates from the 14th Century, contains fine period rooms decorated with oil paintings and sculptures. The museum houses an eclectic collection including the Whalley Abbey vestments, Lancashire-made oak furniture, Pilkington Pottery and the art gallery boasts a spectacular collection of oil paintings including works by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, John William Waterhouse and Johan Zoffany.

Visit the gallery between now and the 30th October, to view David Tomlinson: Light is Colour. This retrospective explores the relationship between the artist, dedication to their medium and the subject matters which inspire on a daily basis. The exhibition covers many decades of David’s work orientated around the people, buildings, places and spaces of Burnley.

Hope Gallery

Hope Gallery is an independent fine art gallery in the town of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. Bury Art Museum opened in 1901 as a purpose-built venue to house and display a collection of Victorian oil paintings, watercolours, etchings, drawings, sculpture, and Wedgwood plaques formed by local paper manufacturer, Thomas Wrigley. Over the last century, Bury’s art collection has developed, but its outstanding strength remains the collection of 19th century British art, including works by Turner, Constable, Landseer, and Clausen.

Roo Waterhouse Art

Roo Waterhouse, an artist based in Hebden Bridge, specialises in carefully rendered, reverential ‘Shelf Portrait’ oil paintings of treasured books. “I enjoy visiting people’s homes, chatting about their book choices, then seeing the stories of their lives unfold before me across the canvas as I paint. It’s a bit like Desert Island Discs!”

Gawthorpe Textiles Collection

Discover Gawthorpe Textiles Collection’s latest contemporary exhibition – Exspiravit by Decorum – produced by five extraordinary female artists working in relation to textile ephemera. The artists have taken inspiration from the textile narratives hidden in hundreds of boxes stored at Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, with their work embodying the traces of past lives in the Hall.

Bound together by their passion for historical textiles and techniques, each artist conveys the stories found in historical textiles through observation of the present. Gawthorpe Textiles Collection contains 30,000 textile and craft items spanning 500 years of global textile heritage. The collection was originally founded in 1959 by the Honourable Rachel Beatrice Kay-Shuttleworth MBE, a life-long collector of global textile and craft items. Known to specialists worldwide and one of the most interesting textile collections in the UK, the collection speaks as much about cultural, social and personal histories as it does about textile craft.

The Bingley Gallery

Situated in the historic mill town of Bingley in Airedale, West Yorkshire. The Bingley Gallery is an artist-run, selling outlet, which incorporates the studio of landscape artist David Starley. Alongside his oil paintings, it shows the work of over 30 talented artists from the region in its eight display areas on two floors with art in a wide variety of sizes, styles and prices. Regular exhibitors include Jane Fielder, who founded the gallery in 2007, Amy Charlesworth, Kate Lycett, Clare Caulfield, Judith Levin, Nettleton Pottery and many more. In addition to the regular exhibitors, a programme of exhibitions by visiting artists changes on a six-weekly basis. The gallery is conveniently located for public transport by rail and bus as well as car and canal boat!
