Dave Zdanowicz is back with a brand new book and this time he’s sharing the limelight with someone very special
by Northern Life
In Yorkshire Revealed I’ve collaborated with my Dad, so the book is roughly half of his pictures and half of mine.” Dave smiles, “It’s another Yorkshire book – I’d been out with my Dad taking photos for the last two, but they only featured my photographs so I thought it would be nice to do a collaboration with my Dad!”
Despite winning accolades such as the Countryfile Reader’s Choice award and having his work featured on BBC, ITV, Sky and in The Sunday Times as well as in our very own Northern Life magazine, it may be a surprise to some that Dave has only owned a camera for six years! His Dad, however, has long been a keen photographer.
“He was into it long before I was to be honest.” Dave laughs, “I kind of picked it up because he was into it really.”
But while they’re a father-son duo, Dave admits that he and his dad both have different styles when it comes to securing that perfect shot.
“He’s probably more inventive than I am. I like the classic shots that I know people will like whereas he gets a bit more creative with it. We can go to the same location and end up with two completely different shots.”
Yet despite their different styles the collaboration still works incredibly well.
“As we’re using both our shots this time, I know we’ll have a decent photograph for each location.” Dave smiles, “In the past, I’ve been to a location and not really had any inspiration for a shot whereas he’ll come away with one. I think that makes for a better book.”
Dave and his dad regularly go out taking photographs together and so I wondered how Dave finds it and whether he’d encourage other people to find a hobby they can share with their family.
“It’s ace. It’s the only time we really spend together away from the standard family time. It’s been brilliant.”
Taking photographs for the book has taken Dave on quite the journey:
“We’ve been to practically everywhere in Yorkshire!” Dave laughs.
“I just love Yorkshire. There’s so many things here to photograph!”
And in the future, there may be some more books, possibly with three generations as Dave’s five-year-old son looks like he might be about to follow in his footsteps.
“My son Jack’s already into photography! We got him a camera last year so watch this space. He reckons I’m an average photographer, and he’s a lot better than me!”
Dave and Paul’s new book Yorkshire Revealed will be out 15th September and will feature a foreword by Dragon’s Dens’ Sarah Willingham.
