There are few better ways to get into a festive mood than singing carols around the Christmas tree or in one of the North’s beautiful churches, cathedrals and venues. Christmas isn’t complete without some carols and the North has some of the most beautiful venues and locations in England providing the perfect way to enjoy the festivities.

We’ve found some of the best Christmas carol services and concerts to enjoy in the North of England.

Sunday 17 December

2.30pm: Christingle ~~Free entry~~ Loved by children and adults alike, Christingle is a special candlelit service.

Monday 18 December

6.00pm: Organ recital La Nativite du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen ~~Free entry~~ Messiaen’s reflective masterpiece performed for Advent and Christmas performed in the Quire by York Minster’s Director of Music Robert Sharpe, with readings and prayers.

Friday 22 December

7.00pm and Sunday 24 December, 4.00pm: Nine Lessons and Carols ~~Free entry~~ Two services consisting of nine special readings, carols sung by the York Minster Choir and hymns for everyone to join in. A traditional Christmas celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Sunday 24 December, Christmas Eve

12noon: Crib Service ~~Free entry~~ Traditional service where families and children are particularly welcome

4.00pm: Nine Lessons and Carols ~~Free entry~~ The second of two services consisting of nine special readings, carols sung by the York Minster Choir and hymns for everyone to join in. A traditional Christmas celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The first Nine Lessons and Carols service takes place on 22 December at 7pm.

11.30pm: First Eucharist of Christmas ~~Free entry~~ Traditional ‘Midnight Mass’ with music from the St William’s Singers and York Young Soloists. Preacher: Canon Chris Collingwood

Thursday 14th December

6:30pm Lancashire Sings Christmas – Carol Service ~~Free entry~~ Note: car parking charges apply. the annual Christmas Carol service on our floating Visitor Village. The service will link up with a broadcast on Radio Lancashire and will feature many well known carols. Seasonal refreshments will be available to purchase on the night.

2:30pm Civic Choirs Christmas Carol Concert ~~Tickets £7.00~~ Celebrate Christmas in style with the Nelson Civic Ladies Choir, Pendle Youth Choir and Pendle Children’s Choir.
